I started Eagle & Fox, in its first incarnation, back in 2004 when I was a student. I didn’t have a grand plan of what kind of company I wanted to run. I was just excited by the idea that I was growing a business.
Customer service, fulfilling orders, and growth were top priorities. Product selection, branding and design were less important. We were one of the first businesses of our kind to be 100% online, so more products was more important than which products.
We made a pretty bold decision in our 2016 strategy meeting – to remove virtually all our listings from eBay.
When we started selling sporrans on eBay in 2004, we were one of the first, if not the first, to do so as a business. Most trade on eBay at the time was personal sales of second hand goods, being sold in auctions rather than fixed price listings. There were some businesses on there but no where near the same level as there are now.
Today we changed our company name.
We’ve been called Macdonald Sporrans for over 11 years and I would love to tell you that name came from some divine inspiration or marketing strategy, but it really didn’t. My surname is Macdonald and I started off selling sporrans, I think we can say there wasn’t a huge amount of creativity going on.
About 15 months ago, my wife joined the business and we started upon a path of change. We made a strong, but difficult, decision to reshape the business to become more of what we wanted it to be – to create our dream business. After undergoing a lot of change in 2015, we feel that we’re starting to achieve that and are ready for the next step.
We’ve changed the way we work, the way we think and what we’re working towards. Changing the name just makes sense.
Our new name is Eagle & Fox.
We want to make the company better and Eagle & Fox is a better representation of who we are and what we do.
This June the business celebrated its 10 year anniversary. A huge amount has happened over the last 10 years. We’ve gone from being a 1 man business run from my bedroom, to a team of people working from our own 15,000 square foot retail/warehouse space.
Another thing happened this year, I got married!
We’re now fully moved into our new premises… and loving it.
We ended up doing the bulk of the move on a Wednesday evening. Pushing through late into the night seemed like a better idea than sacrificing a weekend. Because our old and new premises were very close, we cut down on travel time a lot, and were able to move the remaining stuff over the next few days without impacting the running of the business in any significant way.
We recently celebrated our 10th year in business. Apparently the whole team went out and had a great time – unfortunately I couldn’t make it due to a schedule conflict – I was away in Italy getting married at the time!
We began moving into our new premises last week and we’re planning to be finished by this Sunday. From Monday 18th August, we’ll be fully operational from our new premises.
Almost exactly 10 years after starting this business from my bedroom in my mum’s house, I’m thrilled to announce that we’ve just bought our first property.
We’re proud to be a Leith based business and it was great to receive an email from our local MP Mark Lazarowicz, (MP for Edinburgh North and Leith) in reply to our birthday celebrations.
