Exams are over (or will be soon) and many will be looking forward to attending their graduation ceremony in recognition of all the hard work put in over the course. Many people are unsure as to the etiquette of wearing highland dress to their graduation ceremony. As the kilt is a recognised national dress many universities do allow this.
Universities encourage students to dress up and take pride in their outfit as part of their graduation. It’s a chance to display your Scottish heritage and will certainly set you apart, when many are wearing a uniform shirt and tie.
For a graduation ceremony I would recommend wearing an Argyll outfit worn with a tie but without a waistcoat. This suits the formality of the occasion and can also be worn with a waistcoat to dress it up for more formal occasions or without the tie for casual events. The Argyll Jacket is one of our most versatile jackets, allowing you to have many more uses, long after you graduate.
Some universities do have specific dress codes so please check with them directly for further advice. For example Edinburgh University asks for graduands to wear a white wing collar shirt and bow tie. (Don’t worry we can also supply you with these!)
Graduation is one of the proudest days in your life and to be able to wear your national dress will make it more memorable. When wearing your kilt in years to come, you will be reminded of this special day and many more special occasions where your kilt will be worn.
If you are looking for the perfect gift as a memento of this big day, we have a range of items from figurines, certificate holders and picture frames. We can also supply tankards and hip flasks which can be engraved with your personalised message or even a university crest.
